This document is to help a user access the Quicken application, which runs in a Windows virtual computer on the stovallhut network.
There are two methods for connecting to Quicken. Without a good reason to do otherwise, use Method 1 or Method 2 below.
The most “full-featured” connection to Quicken is to use our remotely service. Remotely has been configured to allow logged in users to view and connect to the Quicken VM desktop.
Connect to Quicken by connecting to the VPN and then logging into remotely (login here or see the short-cut on the stovallhut desktop). Go to your remotely home and see the QUICKEN2025 device listed there.
Click on that device and then Actions→Remote Control.
If the Windows VM is already logged in (normal) then you'll see the desktop and you can run Quicken in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
If Windows is not already logged in, then click on the desktop and you'll be prompted for the PIN. See Windows PIN in the Bitwarden item for Quicken Virtual Machine.
DEACTIVATED - THIS IS NOT CURRENTLY WORKING
This is a little easier to launch than Method 1 but there's a downside - it will be difficult or impossible to copy/paste from Quicken to your personal desktop.
The home.stovallhut.online page has a link you can click to go directly to the Quicken desktop after simply supplying a password (found in bitwarden).
DEACTIVATED - THIS IS NOT CURRENTLY WORKING
Due to some technical problems with display resolution in the new Windows 11 VM (no longer present as of 4/11/2025), the usual means of connecting to a Synology VM won't work right now. As a workaround, follow the instructions in this document for creating a Windows Remote Desktop Connection and run Quicken using this new method. See below.
If your workstation has not been setup to run Quicken, the following steps need to be followed before running Quicken for the first time.
Setup is complete. See the Launching Quicken now to attach to the Quicken VM and run Quicken.
Note that the very first time you run Quicken below, you'll probably see a warning like this about the security certificate.
Select the checkbox to ignore this in the future then [Connect].
To run the Quicken program you'll need to be on the VPN first. Now open the Quicken on StovallHut folder (typically on your Start Menu - see above).
When the folder opens you should see the Quicken on StovallHut VPN.rdp file in Windows Explorer.
Double-click the file to connect to the Windows VM running Quicken. You should see a prompt to authenticate like below.
Enter the normal Quicken application password (see “Quicken QDF file password” in bitwarden).
At successful authentication you should see the Quicken Desktop.
Launch Quicken by clicking in the task-bar of its desktop view.
