Use this selfhosted jitsi app to host or join online meetings with multiple participants. You can attend meetings on your phone/tablet or desktop browser.
To learn about jitsi, you might choose to read their extensive documentation. But do understand, that's a meeting facility where all the data goes through jitsi.org - not meet.stovallhut.online. If you mistakenly create/join meetings at jitsi.org, you'll be unable to communicate with attendees in a meet.stovallhut.online meeting.
It's probably best to read below guide first rather than start at jitsi.org.
What is jitsi as hosted by the hut? When you visit https://meet.stovallhut.online, you're connecting to a web app that allows you to create and/or join online meetings. There are no restrictions on the schedule or duration of the meetings.
How do I create or join a meeting? A meeting is identified only by its room name. There's no difference between creating vs. joining a meeting. If the meeting does not exist yet, it gets created by the first person to join. The first attendee is also the moderator.
Can my room name be anything? Make up any name you want. The more unique the name is, the less likely somebody will accidentally enter your meeting by using the same name. This is a big deal when attending meetings at jitsi.org, less of a concern at meet.stovallhut.online - unless we get famous :)
How do I invite someone to join my meeting? Give them the full URL to your meeting. Call it “mymeeting”, and that will be https://meet.stovallhut.online/mymeeting. If you're in the meeting yourself, see the Invite People toolbar action to quickly put the URL on your clipboard/other.
How do I attend a meeting if I can't remember the room name? Your client app or browser remembers your room-history. When you open the app you'll see a list of meetings you've joined (unless your brower cookies have been cleared). Note this is not the stovallhut server remembering the meeting, it's your device. If you don't have this memory, you'll need to communicate with the moderator/other to get the room name.
Can I connect from anywhere (home/work/wifi/cell)? Generally yes. As currently configured at stovallhut, you may not be able to connect from some corporate networks or setups with outgoing firewalls. If you have this problem then let us know. There are ways around it that I have not yet bothered to implement. This problem could also apply if you run a home lab with tight outgoing firewall controls (on a technical level, jitsi needs to establish a UDP connection to meet.stovallhut.online on port 10000 to transfer audio/visual during the meeting).
Are meetings recorded? No. A meeting exists only while people have joined it. No content is recorded. When the meeting ends, the stovallhut server retains no memory of it - not even the room name. You might notice a tool for recording in your app while you're in a meeting. This is a recording that YOU are making and saving on your device. The server knows nothing about it. What's more, when these recordings get made, other attendes do NOT get notified they're being recorded (at least I think that's current - I haven't played with it). This is a topic of some controversy and the app may change in the future. Also just so we're clear, anybody can choose to record you while you're meeting with them whether it's the jitsi app or not - it's just not as convenient as the jisi u/i makes it.
Optionally press the gear/settings icon in the upper-right and configure various options.
Type in a room name. This needs to be the agreed upon exact name used by all attendees.
Click the [Start meeting] button to start or join the named meeting. You'll see a screen where you can confirm the meeting name and your mic/camera settings below.
Joining meeting with room name “HumblePie”
Click the arrow next to the microphone. As you speak you should see the sound-graph animate.
If the camera is connected, you'll see yourself. If not then push the arrow next to the camera icon and adjust settings.
if the browser shows a prompt to allow connection to your mic/camera - tell it allow
When you're ready, press [Join meeting].
You should now be joined and see all participants (unless you're the first).
If your only common use of the jitsi app is to join meetings at stovallhut, consider setting the Server URL in your settings. Why? Because otherwise when you identify a meeting, you need to identify it by the full URL such as https://meet.stovallhut.online/mymeeting. If you only supply the Room Name then the app will think the meeting is at jitsi.org and you won't get the desired effect.
Set the Server URL to: https://meet.stovallhut.online
The end result: You type a meeting name and the app knows you mean at meet.stovallhut.online. If you really want to point to another server, you can still give it the full URL.
